Raspberry Curd

May 31, 2009

Often when I have an idea for a dessert in my head it takes over and occupies my mind until I have an opportunity to try it. Then, even if it doesn’t work out as planned, I can let it go until the next idea comes along and drags me into the kitchen. That is […]

S’more Cupcakes

May 20, 2009

As I mentioned in my last post, once I had made graham cracker cupcakes my mind immediately turned to smores. I had some extra batter left over from baking the bases for the ice cream cupcakes, and decided to make mini cupcakes (mostly because I had cute new mini cupcake papers I wanted to use).

Magic Ice Cream Cupcakes

May 17, 2009

One of the reasons I have not been blogging lately, besides just being extremely busy with finishing up school (I am being ordained on Thursday!), is that I have been experimenting with my own recipes. Since I don’t want to post them before they are right, I have been doing more baking than I have […]

Mandelbrot: A Tribute to Rose

May 3, 2009

My husband’s grandmother Rose passed away last week and we spent the week in Tennessee with his family. I wanted to do something to honor the memory of this wonderful woman who welcomed me into the family and treated me like her own granddaughter from the moment we met, so I decided to feature her famous mandelbrot […]

Root Beer Bundt Cake

April 21, 2009

I’ve been seeing the book Baked: New Frontiers in Baking praised all over the web. Any book by a bakery whose signature cake is called “Sweet and Salty Cake” was a book I had to have. Needless to say, I was very excited when my copy came and immediately read through the entire book. I am itching […]

One of the major differences between the laws of Shabbat and those of holidays is that it is permitted to cook on holidays even though it is forbidden on Shabbat. Anything that is going to be served on shabbat needs to be able to be made ahead and served no less than several hours later. […]

Blackberry Parfait

April 6, 2009

For some reason I always crave ice cream on Passover. Not bread, not muffins, not pasta but a big ice cream sundae like the one in the picture. It is strange, because there is no inherent reason ice cream cannot be kosher for Passover,  but I have yet to find a kosher for Passover ice […]

Homemade Vanilla Marshmallows

April 5, 2009

One thing that never seems to be lack on Passover is candy. Synagogue schools sell it as a fundraiser, and otherwise health conscious people somehow seem to decide that at least a box of candy per person is a necessary staple to make it through the holiday. As a kid I eagerly looked forward to […]

Passover brownies

April 2, 2009

I know it is tempting to buy the Manischewitz box of brownie mix for Passover. There is so much other cooking to do, there is something nostalgic about it, and it comes with that convinent little tin baking pan.  RESIST THAT URGE! These brownies only take marginally more effort and they are so much better […]

Flourless Almond Thumbprint Cookies

March 31, 2009

Almond butter was my new favorite discovery last Passover. Spread on matzah with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey it was a breakfast/snack truly worth savoring. This year I decided to take the almond butter to the next level with these almond thumbprint cookies. These cookies are absolutely wonderful. Not only are […]
